Anyone who has been paying attention (and has been getting news from anywhere other than the mainstream media) knows the violent crime in many places in America has skyrocketed over the past year and a half. It’s gotten downright scary to live in many cities because of radicals’ efforts to defund the police and because weak leftist politicians have given into that crazy demand.
Now, Joe Biden’s Attorney General, Merrick Garland, has announced new initiatives to combat this spike in violent crime in America. And, if you read between the lines and think about how this will play out, Garland’s move could have really scary implications for America’s police departments and for the American people. Janita Kan writes,
Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on May 26 a new three-pronged initiative to help combat the surge of violent crime in several U.S. cities in the wake of George Floyd’s death last summer.
Garland’s strategy consists of directing the Justice Department’s 94 U.S. attorney’s offices to adopt a set of principles focused on improving the department’s approach to reducing violent crime, such as improving community relations and investing in prevention programs.
The initiative will also require U.S. attorney’s offices to work closely with state, local, federal, tribal, and community partners to address violent crimes seen over the summer, such as murders, shootings, and robberies. The current Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program also will be updated.
“The deputy attorney general is issuing a comprehensive strategy to deploy our federal resources in the most effective way, disrupting the most dangerous threats and supporting the ground-level efforts of local law enforcement.”
Okay, that all sounds nice on paper, right? But think about this further. The end effect of Garland’s plan will be to put local police departments under Federal control. This means more failed top down approaches to solving local problems. That is already failing spectacularly for the economy in Biden’s less than six months in office (at the time of this writing). How do you think that will play out for law enforcement and crime prevention?
Here’s the answer: over time, it will cause crime to get worse all over America as the hands of local police are tied so that they can only implement Federal programs which won’t take into consideration local concerns and problems.
That is not the way to have effective law enforcement. That’s not the way to have government that actually helps the people. But that is exactly what Democrats keep trying to shove down our throats.
