President Trump is stepping in over Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to reverse a budget request that would have pulled funding intended for the Special Olympics.
While speaking with reporters outside the White House President Trump stated, “The Special Olympics will be funded. I just told my people I want to fund the Special Olympics and I’ve just authorized a funding of the Special Olympics. I’ve been to the Special Olympics. I think it’s incredible and I just authorized a funding. I heard about it this morning. I have overridden my people. We’re funding the Special Olympics.”
DeVos made quite the stir when she requested the House Education Appropriations Subcommittee to withhold $17.6 million in funding intended for the Special Olympics.
Democrats were incensed by the announcement and began picking apart both DeVos and the Trump administration. Reps. Mark Pocan, Amy Klobuchar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made attacks over Twitter.
After Trump successfully put an end to the Democrats fire, DeVos thanked the President for his judgement on the matter via statement. “I am pleased and grateful the president and I see eye-to-eye on this issue, and that he has decided to fund our Special Olympics grant,” she shared. “This is funding I have fought for behind-the-scenes over the last several years.”
