Democrats are doing literally anything they can to get a peek at President Trump’s tax returns.
NBC reports that Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal (D-MA) is having the committee’s attorneys prepare a request for years’ worth of Trump’s personal tax returns. Congressional aides involved in the request told the media outlet that Democrats were prepared to “take all necessary steps” to get their hands on Trump’s taxes.
“Every day the American people and Congress learn more about President Trump’s improprieties, from conflicts of interest to influence peddling, potential tax evasion and violations of the Constitution — all roads leading back to President Trump’s finances,” Ashley Etienne, spokeswoman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), told NBC.
Ways and Means is the tax-writing committee, and the only one with the authority to request the president’s tax returns, though NBC says Neal has reached out to the chairs of other committees to provide their own arguments for why they need the tax returns for their various investigations into Trump.
As soon as Democrats won back control of the House of Representatives in November 2018, they have promised to conduct endless investigations into Trump in order to get him out of office, as they are still wounded from Hillary Clinton’s loss in 2016.
Earlier this month, Democrats held a hearing to start building a case for obtaining Trump’s tax returns. Now they’re prepared to act, even if it means litigation.
Trump wasn’t required to release his tax returns while running for president, but he was the first president to refuse to do so in decades. Democrats, hellbent in proving Trump either didn’t really win the 2016 election or is a criminal who should not be president, believe the answer to their bitterness lies in Trump’s taxes.
MSNBC host Rachel Maddow tried and failed in 2017 to prove Trump’s tax returns held the key to his demise. The host teased for hours that her program had obtained Trump’s tax returns and that they proved everything everyone who hates Trump wanted them to prove.
In reality, Maddow only had two pages from Trump’s 2005 tax returns, and embarrassingly (for Maddow and Trump haters) proved that the real-estate mogul paid a higher percentage of his taxes than President Barack Obama, Socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Comcast.
NBC reports that attorneys for the Ways and Means committee “are expected to craft a request as precise as possible, aides said, in order to short circuit an all-but-certain legal challenge by the president that could draw the process out.”
Attorneys are likely to limit the request to Trump’s personal finances, since the Trump Organization’s structure would make it difficult to quickly analyze and use as fodder for attacking the president.
This desperation for a Republican’s tax returns was last seen when former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) claimed, without evidence, that Mitt Romney paid no income taxes and demanded the then-presidential candidate turn them over to prove Reid was lying. Years later, Reid bragged that his lie helped keep Romney out of the White House.
