The longest government shutdown in history threatened to upend a banquet celebration at the White House for the Clemson football team.
Given that nearly 800,000 federal employees are on furlough, it’s no surprise that the White House residency staff is also on what Kevin Hassett would call an “extended vacation.”
With no one to prepare the meal things did not look good for the planned reception of the national champions.
But President Donald Trump isn’t the kind of person to let things fall short in the face of adversity. He quickly arranged for catering by many of the United States most well known food chains and personally covered the bill.
“The Clemson national championship team will be coming tonight. It will be exciting,” Trump said. “Very great team. An unbelievable team. I think we’re going to serve McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Burger Kings with some pizza. I really mean it. It will be interesting. I would think that’s their favorite food.”
Trump certainly delivered with platters piled high with individually wrapped sandwiches, salads and boxes of pizza.
While some have criticized that champion athletes wouldn’t’ regularly eat such fare, it’s easy to see that among a crowd of college level players the banquet was a big hit.
