In a shocking and abrupt move,U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis declared his resignation to the Trump administration.
Mattis was seen as tempering force on Trump’s cabinet and his departure will surely cause substantial upset in Washington.
It appears that things hit a breaking point between Mattis and Trump after the president announced the withdrawal of U.S. troops in Syria. Many advisors in Washington, including Mattis, strongly opposed the move with Mattis making his resignation the following day.
“Because you have a right to a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects, I believe it is right for me to step down from my position,” Mattis said in his resignation letter, released by the Pentagon.
Signs appeared that things between President Trump and General Mattis were deteriorating. I While on CBS Trump once said that Mattis was “sort of a Democrat” and at the time hinted at his departure.
This will have a big effect on the world stage as well. Germany’s Defense Minister Ursula Von der Leyen quickly asked for clarification concerning the news.
“Because the United States has such a prominent role and responsibility in the global security architecture, it is important for everyone to quickly get clarity about succession and the future course,” the minister said via statement.
